This was beautiful Elisabeth! A wonderful morsel to read in the morning, and I love how you tied all the pieces together, ending on the note of active discernment. Really beautifully done!! Thank you for these TGH posts, by the way. They're helpful and improve my listening!
Ah, this is so good, Elisabeth! I love the song Silver, "On Faerie Stories," and "Mythopoeia," and I really enjoyed how you tied these three together!! The connections between these, and between Silver and "The Silver Chair," are so cool. I also really appreciated your exhortation at the end of the post. This was lovely to read! 🤍
I'm proud of you, dear discerning daughter. You have always been an eager and earnest pupil. I'm thankful that we have had the privilege of learning discernment together through your years. As the author of Hebrews teaches us, and as you summarized it, discernment is having the "powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil" (Heb. 5:14). As one great man put it: "The line between good and evil runs through every human heart." There is in this world both common grace where we see truth, beauty, and goodness, wonderful remains of God's good creation before the fall; there is also in this world common curse, where truth, beauty, and goodness can be exchanged for a lie, for ugliness, etc (Rom. 1:20-25), thus why the Holy Spirit, the Author of all beauty, truth, and goodness, gives us discernment. As our Father in the faith John Calvin said: "Truth is true wherever you find it, and if we disregard this truth, we can be dishonoring to the Holy Spirit" (paraphrased).
I loved this post, Elisabeth! When I own my own copy of The Silver Chair, I'm definitely going to write the quotes about silver from "Mythopoeia" in the front. What a delightful thing to ponder; perhaps Tolkien's poem actually inspired the story from TSC! 😍

Thank you so much, Kate! I love making connections (and the one between Lewis' book and the song made me nerd out a little bit 😂).
